Summer Workshop |
This summer the Kirby String Quartet ( www.kirbyquartet.com ) will return to Langley for the fourth time, for an exiting week of chamber music. The Quartet will be joined by Kathy Bjorseth, pianist and Heilwig von Königslöw, violinist/violist. The course will run from Sunday, August 10th to Friday, August 15th at Trinity Western University. String players and pianists who are serious about enhancing their listening and communication skills are welcome to apply.
This year's workshop marks a departure from the format of the last three years. Our summer workshop has at its core the belief that chamber music is a very special form of music making, and to make this experience more intense and satisfying, we have expanded the workshop to allow participants to live in residence at Trinity Western University. It is our hope that all participants will take advantage of this new addition, as it will allow us to expand the programme, by adding evening activities, such as chamber music sight-reading parties.
At the heart of this course is the belief that playing chamber music can teach cooperation and collaboration, as it demands that each player engages in a close musical dialogue with the other performers. This sense of collective music making is deeply satisfying. The philosophy of partnership is continued in the chamber orchestra component, allowing faculty and students to work together on string orchestra repertoire without a conductor.
