SUMMER MUSIC HISTORY CLASSES

  Your opportunity to complete the History I or History II requirements this summer in only 6 weeks.

 

HISTORY I  An Overview: Eight hours of classes per week for a total of 48 hours of class time.

This course (formerly called History III) covers the music of the Baroque -, Classical -, and Romantic Periods, as well as the 20th Century, as outlined in the 2002 Theory Syllabus.

The texts to be used will be the "Musical Overview" by Linda Sheppard ( www.longbow.ca ) and the exam booklets for History I 2005 to 2007 published by Frederick Harris. Students are responsible for purchasing their own texts.

Cost is $500.00 and includes class time and study materials.

 

HISTORY II  Middle Ages to Classical: Eight hours of classes per week for a total of 48 hours of class time.

This course (formerly called History IV) covers a large amount of material, from Gregorian Chant to Beethoven. as outlined in the 2002 Theory Syllabus.

The texts to be used will be the "Early Music" by Linda Sheppard ( www.longbow.ca ) and the exam booklets for History II  2005 to 2007 published by Frederick Harris. Students are responsible for purchasing their own texts.

Cost is $500.00 and includes class time and study material

 

EXAM IS AUGUST 8th  - RCM Exam Registration Deadline is JUNE 3rd

(The cost of the exam, the text and the practice exams is not included in the tuition fee.)

 

GENERAL INFORMATION:

               Classes start June 30th and will be scheduled as follows:

          History I  —  Mon. and  Wed. 10 —  1:30pm

        History II  —  Tues. and  Thur. 10 — 1:30pm

      Please note that these times are negotiable .

 

        Emphasis in the classes will be on listening to the music that is being studied.  Students will learn how to distinguish the style characteristics of different composers and time periods, and how to recognize the structure and form of what they are hearing.

        Students will have to study and memorize dates, composers' lives, and other relevant material on their own and in study groups. Each hour of class time will have to be matched by two hours of individual and/or group study.
